Phil conducted courses on the History of the Native Peoples of Joshua Tree National Park and Cultural Preservation and Revitalization in 2008, 2009, 2012 and 2013 with Chemehuevi Tribal Council Member and Salt Song Project co-founder Matthew Leivas, Sr., linguist Ernie Siva (Luseno), anthropologist Dr. John Lowell Bean and UC Riverside Professor Dr. Cliff Trafzer (Wiyot). In 2016, he moderated the panel “The Salt Song Trail Project and the Victory at Ward Valley” with Matthew Levais, Sr. as part of the “Gathering of the Tribes” conference held at Joshua Tree National Park.
